Ahmedabad: In a sophisticated cyber fraud case, the Ahmedabad Police Cyber Crime Branch on Wednesday arrested four men for allegedly using artificial intelligence tools, including Google Gemini, to create deepfake videos and bypass Aadhaar verification systems.
The case surfaced after an Ahmedabad-based businessman involved in import-export noticed he had stopped receiving bank OTPs for two days and reported the anomaly. Investigators found that the mobile number linked to his Aadhaar had been changed without OTP verification and his biometric data tampered with. The accused then redirected OTPs to their own number.
Using the victim’s Aadhaar details, the gang attempted to open accounts across three banks via e-KYC, successfully creating one with Jio Payments Bank and securing a loan of Rs 25,000.
They also accessed his DigiLocker account to retrieve documents.
Police said one accused, linked to a Common Service Centre, misused official Aadhaar access systems. The arrested have been identified as Kanubhai Parmar, Ashish Vanand, Mohammad Kaif Patel and Deep Gupta.
Officials described the method as highly sophisticated.
The incident comes days after Nirmala Sitharaman chaired a high-level meeting on AI-driven cybersecurity risks, including concerns around Claude Mythos.
