As cyber fraud cases surge across India, experts are urging people to exercise greater caution while conducting financial transactions online and responding to unsolicited calls or messages.
Police officials say the most common scams include fake bank calls, phishing links sent through text or email, and fraudulent apps disguised as legitimate services. Victims are often tricked into revealing sensitive information such as bank account details, ATM PINs, or one-time passwords (OTPs).
Authorities recommend simple but effective steps to avoid falling prey. Never share personal or financial information over the phone, even if the caller claims to be from a bank or government agency. Banks repeatedly stress that they never ask customers for PINs or OTPs.
Cybersecurity experts also advise people to avoid clicking on unknown links, downloading suspicious apps, or engaging with messages that promise large rewards. Instead, users should verify the authenticity of websites and applications before entering any details.
In addition, officials recommend enabling two-factor authentication, using strong passwords, and regularly updating antivirus software. People should also review their bank statements to quickly spot unauthorized transactions.
If someone suspects they have been targeted, they should immediately report the matter to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in) or dial the helpline number 1930. Prompt reporting, police say, increases the chances of recovering stolen money.
With cybercriminals adopting new tactics every day, experts stress that vigilance is the first line of defense. As one senior officer put it, “The best way to stay safe online is to pause, verify, and only then act.”
