Kolkata:A trader from Chowbaga in Kolkata fell victim to an online investment scam and was allegedly duped of nearly Rs 23 lakh through a WhatsApp group promising high returns.
According to a report on Times of India, the incident began on February 23 when the victim was added to a WhatsApp group named “U-3 India Wealth Strategy Discussion Group.” The group, operated by multiple admins using different mobile numbers including international prefixes, allegedly lured members with assurances of lucrative investment opportunities.
Trusting the claims, the trader transferred a total of Rs 22,98,000 through various banking channels including IMPS, RTGS, UPI and NEFT between March 3 and March 25.
The fraud came to light when the victim attempted to withdraw a portion of the promised returns but was unable to access the funds. Realising he had been cheated, he approached the police.
A complaint was filed at Anandapur Police Station, and a case was registered on April 3. Authorities have initiated an investigation under Sections 316(2), 318(4) and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Police are currently probing the digital trail and bank accounts linked to the accused, who are suspected to be operating from multiple locations.
