The news of Anna Sebastian Perayil, a 26-year-old employee from EY whose death due to alleged ‘work stress’ sent shock waves amongst the corporate world at large has once again highlighted the importance of work-life balance culture and what organisations should do to make their employees not feel ‘overwhelmed’.
But how can one maintain this ‘work-life’ balance?
Consultant psychiatrist Dr Charan Teja Koganti emphasises the importance of setting clear boundaries and goals and ensuring that work stays within designated hours. “Effective time management is also essential, allowing individuals to prioritise tasks efficiently and make time for themselves and their families. Taking regular breaks—whether a few minutes every hour or a week off—helps recharge the mind and prevent burnout.”
Dr Koganti also suggests ending the workday at a specific time, especially for those working from home, where the lines between work and personal life can blur easily. “Finding a hobby outside work can help disconnect and ensure a more fulfilling personal life. Regular self-assessment is also critical—checking in on mood, energy, and sleep can reveal when something is off, and seeking professional help can ensure that mental health stays on track.”
Employees and employers alike play a role in promoting balance. Open communication is needed for a long and healthy professional life. Dr Koganti said, “Open communication with your employer about workload and personal needs can alleviate stress while setting realistic goals prevents feeling overwhelmed. Taking time off, whether for short breaks or vacations, is essential for long-term productivity.”
An HR professional who did not wish to be named highlighted that work-life balance isn’t just about preventing burnout but also about creating a culture that values personal time and supports professional and personal well-being. This leads to happier, more productive employees.
One employee from the media sector also reflected on their experience, noting that setting clear boundaries and disconnecting from work after hours significantly reduced their stress and improved focus. “By reclaiming personal time and making space for hobbies and family, employees enhance their well-being and job performance,” she said.
Work-life balance is continuous, but consistent effort leads to a happier, healthier, and more productive life.
