Karnataka Food Safety Department Issues Warning On Carcinogenic Ingredients In Bakery Cakes

Date:

Bengaluru: The Karnataka Food Safety and Quality Department has issued an urgent advisory cautioning consumers about the potential health risks associated with cakes sold in local bakeries. Recent tests conducted by the department revealed that cakes from various Bengaluru bakeries contain harmful substances that may increase the risk of cancer.

The warning comes after an investigation identified carcinogenic ingredients in 12 different cake varieties. Artificial colors commonly used to enhance the appearance of popular cakes, such as red velvet and black forest, were found to contain dangerous chemicals like Allura Red, Sunset Yellow FCF, Ponso 4R, Tartrazine, and Carmoisine. These synthetic dyes, while creating eye-catching visuals, pose serious health hazards, according to food safety experts.

The department has urged all bakeries to adhere strictly to food safety standards, emphasizing that these additives not only increase cancer risks but may also contribute to various other physical and mental health issues.

This latest revelation has intensified concerns among consumers, particularly those who regularly enjoy bakery cakes. The appeal of vibrant colors in cakes, which often drive their popularity, is now being scrutinized due to the potential long-term health effects.

This isn’t the first time the Karnataka Food Safety Department has raised alarms about dangerous substances in popular foods. In recent months, the government has also flagged issues with commonly consumed street foods, such as gobi manchurian, kebabs, and pani puri.

Earlier this year, the state government banned the use of Rhodamine-B, a chemical used in textile dyeing and papermaking, after it was discovered in some street foods to enhance their appearance.

Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao has reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring food safety and has promised stringent action against any establishments found violating these regulations. He stressed that businesses must prioritize the health of their customers over aesthetic appeal.
