Myth Vs Reality: What Tea Really Does To Your Body?

Date:

On International Tea Day, billions of cups of tea are expected to be poured around the world. But alongside the beverage’s popularity comes a flood of myths — many passed down through generations and amplified on social media.

From claims that tea darkens skin to fears that it weakens bones, health experts say several common beliefs about tea do not hold up scientifically.

Here’s a closer look at some of the most widely shared tea myths.

Myth 1: Tea Darkens Skin

This remains one of the most common beauty-related myths in parts of India and South Asia.

Dermatologists say drinking tea does not alter a person’s skin colour. Skin tone is primarily influenced by genetics, sun exposure, hormones and skincare habits — not tea consumption.

Experts say the misconception may stem from tea stains on cups and teeth, leading some people to incorrectly assume it can also “stain” the skin internally.

Myth 2: Tea Causes Permanent Dark Lips

Tea can stain teeth over time, particularly black tea, but doctors say it does not directly cause permanent darkening of the lips.

Lip discolouration is more commonly linked to dehydration, smoking, excessive sun exposure, allergies or certain cosmetic products.

Myth 3: Tea Dehydrates The Body

Despite containing caffeine, moderate tea consumption generally contributes to hydration rather than causing dehydration.

Nutritionists say regular tea drinkers often develop tolerance to caffeine’s mild diuretic effect, making normal tea intake safe for hydration.

Myth 4: Drinking Tea On An Empty Stomach Is Always Dangerous

Many people believe morning tea is harmful under all circumstances.

Doctors say tea consumed on an empty stomach may cause acidity or discomfort for some individuals, especially if it is very strong, but it is not universally harmful. The effects vary from person to person.

Myth 5: Green Tea Melts Fat Instantly

Green tea is often promoted online as a “miracle weight-loss drink.”

Experts say that while green tea may slightly support metabolism, it cannot replace balanced nutrition, adequate sleep and exercise. Drinking large quantities alone will not result in dramatic weight loss.

Myth 6: Tea Stops Height Growth

Some parents discourage teenagers from drinking tea because they fear it may stunt growth.

Medical experts say there is no evidence that moderate tea consumption affects height growth. Growth is primarily determined by genetics, nutrition, hormones and overall health.

Myth 7: Strong Tea Gives More Energy

A darker brew does not always mean significantly more energy.

Caffeine levels depend on brewing time, tea variety and quantity used. Over-brewed tea may taste stronger and more bitter without providing substantially greater stimulation.

Myth 8: Tea Can Cure Diseases

From viral infections to diabetes, social media posts often exaggerate tea’s healing powers.

Doctors caution that while tea may provide antioxidants and comfort, it is not a substitute for proper medical treatment.

Myth 9: Milk Completely Destroys Tea’s Benefits

Scientists say adding milk may slightly affect the absorption of certain antioxidants, but milk tea still retains beneficial compounds.

For many tea lovers, especially chai drinkers in India, the cultural connection is as significant as the nutritional aspect.

More Than A Beverage

Tea remains one of the world’s most consumed drinks after water and supports millions of workers globally. The United Nations observes International Tea Day to recognise the cultural and economic importance of tea production.

This year, experts say the best way to celebrate may be simple: enjoy the drink, but leave the myths behind.
