Shabana Azmi Condemns CISF Constable Slapping Kangana Ranaut

New Delhi: Veteran actor Shabana Azmi has voiced her concerns over the recent altercation involving newly elected MP and actor Kangana Ranaut, emphasizing that security personnel should refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

“I have no love lost for Kangana Ranaut. But I can’t find myself joining this chorus of celebrating ‘the slap’. If security personnel start taking law into their hands, none of us can be safe,” Shabana Azmi shared on X – formerly known as Twitter.

The incident occurred days ago at Chandigarh airport, where Kangana Ranaut, who recently won the Lok Sabha election from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi constituency, was allegedly slapped by a Central Industrial Security Force constable. The altercation took place as Ranaut was about to board a flight to Delhi.

Footage captured on mobile phones, rapidly circulating online, depicts Ranaut being escorted to a check-in counter when a verbal altercation ensued. However, the video does not capture the moment of the alleged slap.

In a subsequent video statement, Ranaut expressed her safety concerns, particularly regarding the rising issue of terrorism in Punjab. She recounted the incident, stating that she was struck by the constable, who reportedly cited support for farmers as her reason for the action.

Kulwinder Kaur, the constable involved, justified her actions by claiming that Ranaut had disrespected farmers with her remarks. This prompted her to take action, leading to her suspension and the registration of a First Information Report (FIR).

Ranaut’s past comments on social media have stirred controversy, notably her remark in December 2020, where she referred to farmers protesting the farm laws as being available for a sum of ₹100. Her subsequent statements, including labeling the protestors as “terrorists” in February 2021, further exacerbated tensions.

The repeal of the contentious farm laws in December 2021 did not quell the aftermath, as Ranaut’s car was stopped by protesters in Punjab’s Kiratpur Sahib, demanding an apology for her remarks against farmers. Ranaut was permitted to leave after engaging in dialogue with the demonstrators.
