14 Killed, Multiple Injured In Rudraprayag Accident; PM Modi Announces Ex-Gratia

Rudraprayag: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed condolences to the families affected by the tragic road accident in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag, where a tempo traveller carrying 26 passengers plunged into a gorge. The accident on the Badrinath Highway led to the deaths of 14 people and injuries to thirteen others.

PM Modi described the incident as “heartbreaking” and extended his deepest sympathies to the bereaved families. PM Modi also announced that an ex-gratia relief of Rs. 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) will be provided to the next of kin of each deceased in the tragic road accident in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag. Additionally, Rs. 50,000 will be given to each of the injured individuals.

PM Modi in a statement wrote, The road accident in Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand is heartbreaking. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families who lost their loved ones in this. Along with this, I wish for the speedy recovery of all the injured. Under the supervision of the state government, the local administration is engaged in all possible help to the victims.”

The incident occurred when a tempo traveller carrying 26 passengers en route from Noida to Rudraprayag veered off the road and plunged into a 150-meter-deep gorge. Emergency responders, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and police officials, swiftly arrived at the scene to conduct rescue operations and provide assistance to the injured.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed condolences over the loss of lives in the accident and said the seriously injured passengers are being airlifted to AIIMS Rishikesh.

Taking to X, CM Dhami wrote, “Very sad news was received about a tempo traveler accident in Rudraprayag district. The local administration and SDRF teams are engaged in relief and rescue operations. The injured have been sent to the nearest medical center for treatment. The District Magistrate has been ordered to investigate the incident.”

“I pray to God to grant the souls of the departed a place in His feet and provide strength to the bereaved family to bear this immense pain. I pray to Baba Kedar for the speedy recovery of the injured,” he added.

Garhwal Inspector General KS Nagnyal reported that the local administration, residents, and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are actively involved in rescue and relief efforts following a tragic accident on the Badrinath Highway.

According to IG Nagnyal, eight bodies have been recovered so far, and nine injured individuals, including the severely injured driver, have been transported to the hospital. The exact number of tourists onboard at the time of the accident remains unclear.
