21 Dead in Malviya Nagar Fire, PM Modi, Rahul Gandhi Express Condolences

At least 21 people lost their lives and dozens sustained injuries after a major fire broke out at a restaurant in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar on Wednesday morning. Officials said more than 40 people have been rescued and shifted to hospitals, with several reported to be in critical condition.

According to police, information about the incident at Flourish Stay B&B was received at around 8:48 am, following which firefighting teams were immediately dispatched to the spot. Officials said some people attempted to jump from the upper floors of the building in an effort to escape the flames.

Rescue and search operations are still underway, while the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the loss of lives as “tragic” and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh from the PMNRF for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those injured.

Rahul Gandhi said, “The news of the deaths of several people in the fire in Malviya Nagar, Delhi, is extremely heartbreaking.”

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta wrote, “Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives in the devastating fire incident in Malviya Nagar.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, “My heart is deeply grieved by the fire incident in Malviya Nagar, Delhi.”
