“There has been no response from the appropriate authority to solve and to save our children from impending health disaster,” the senior doctors stated in their resignation letter.
The junior doctors, who have been on a hunger strike since Saturday, are demanding justice for their murdered colleague. They accuse a corruption-threat syndicate of negligence and have been calling for sweeping reforms at the hospital. Their demands include a centralized referral system for all medical facilities in the state, a bed vacancy monitoring system, and the establishment of task forces to ensure the provision of essential infrastructure such as CCTV, on-call rooms, and proper washrooms.
They also seek increased security at hospitals, particularly the recruitment of permanent female police officers, and the filling of vacant positions for doctors, nurses, and other healthcare staff.
The protest movement has intensified during the Durga Puja celebrations, casting a shadow over one of Kolkata’s most cherished festivals. The city, typically abuzz with festivities, has been gripped by outrage and sorrow over the brutal killing of the young doctor.
Despite the unrest, West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant attempted to reassure the medical community earlier on Monday. He stated that 90 percent of the ongoing infrastructure projects at medical colleges in the state would be completed by next month and urged the striking doctors to return to work.
The protests began shortly after the discovery of the trainee doctor’s body on August 9. She was found murdered while on duty at RG Kar Medical College, sparking widespread anger and fear. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is handling the case, has charged Sanjoy Roy, a former Kolkata Police contractual worker, with the rape and murder of the doctor.
As the strike continues, tensions between the protesting doctors and the state authorities remain high, with the medical fraternity demanding swift justice and systemic reforms to prevent further tragedies.
