Air India Inks Landmark 470 Planes Deal; UK PM Welcomes Momentous Deal, Biden Calls It ‘Historic Agreement’

New Delhi: The Tata Group-owned Air India has placed an order to buy 470 planes,  making it the largest order in the history of civil aviation by a single airline.

N.Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, at a virtual unveiling of the announcement in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron added, “Today I am happy to announce that we have signed a letter of intent to acquire 250 aircraft from Airbus,”.

Air India in a statement added that “The order comprises 40 Albus A350, 20 Boeing 787 and 10 Boeing 7779s widebody aircraft, as well 210 Airbus A320/321 Neos and 190 Boeing 737 MAX single-aisle aircraft.”

The statement further added that “The A350 aircraft will be powered by Rolls-Royce engines and the 8777/787 by engines from GE Aerospace. All single-aisle aircraft will be powered by engines from CFM International.”

US President Joe Biden hailed Air India’s “historic agreement”. According to reports, President Joe Biden said that he and PM Modi were looking forward to deepening India-US ties.

Biden in a statement added that “This announcement also reflects the strength of US-India economic partnership. Together with PM Modi, I look forward to deepening our partnership even further as we continue to confront shared global challenges—creating a more secure & prosperous future for all.”

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak welcomed the Historic Air India deal. UK’s Department for International Trade in a statement added that “The Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Business and Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch have welcomed a momentous deal for Airbus and Rolls-Royce to provide new aircraft for Air India, which is worth billions of pounds to the UK”.

According to the press release, a significant portion of the manufacturing process for the new aircraft is expected to take place in the UK.

The statement added that “The wings will be designed in Filton, and assembled in Broughton, which is expected to bring an additional 450 manufacturing jobs and more than £100m of investment to Wales. The large A350 aircraft are exclusively powered by Rolls-Royce XWB engines, which are assembled and tested in Derby, “.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it a “hallmark deal” in the history of Indian Civil Aviation. PM Modi added that “Our civil aviation sector is an integral part of India’s development. Strengthening the civil aviation sector is an important aspect of our national infrastructure policy,”.
