In a decisive military operation showcasing India’s technological prowess and defence self-reliance, Operation Sindoor struck high-value terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) with precision and without the loss of any Indian assets, an official government statement said. The mission, launched in retaliation to the deadly April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians, represents a pivotal moment in India’s military doctrine — one that blends indigenous innovation with strategic restraint.
According to an official government release, Indian forces neutralised multiple terror camps and military installations, including radar and missile systems at Noor Khan and Rahimyar Khan airbases, using loitering munitions and long-range drones. All objectives were achieved without crossing the Line of Control or international boundary, highlighting a politically calibrated approach to counter-terrorism.
Technology-Led Defence
What sets Operation Sindoor apart is its deep reliance on domestically developed technologies. From real-time surveillance and target acquisition to the deployment of loitering munitions and guided munitions, the operation was executed with the support of battle-proven and indigenous systems.
The Akash missile system, LLAD guns, Pechora, and OSA-AK platforms played critical roles in India’s air defence, while the Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS) enabled seamless net-centric operations. The Indian Air Force is reported to have jammed Chinese-supplied Pakistani air defences, completing the entire strike operation in just 23 minutes.
Fragments of enemy technology — including Chinese-origin PL-15 missiles, Turkish UAVs, and quadcopters — were recovered, confirming India’s successful neutralisation of foreign-supplied assets deployed by Pakistan.
Foiling Enemy Retaliation
Anticipating a possible counter strike, India deployed a robust multi-layered defence grid across its northern and western frontiers. Between May 7 and 10, Pakistan attempted to strike Indian military targets using drones and missiles across cities including Srinagar, Jammu, Amritsar, Pathankot, Bhatinda, and Bhuj. These attempts were neutralised by India’s integrated Air Defence and Counter-UAS systems, ensuring the safety of both civilian and military infrastructure.
The synergy between the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force in executing a tightly coordinated defence proved crucial in thwarting retaliatory strikes and maintaining strategic upper hand.
ISRO’s Role in National Security
In a statement on May 11, ISRO Chairman V Narayanan revealed that at least 10 satellites are operational round-the-clock for national security. These space-based assets monitored India’s 7,000 km coastline and the northern border, providing critical intelligence for Operation Sindoor. “Without satellites and drones, a mission of this complexity would be unthinkable,” he said.
Rise of India’s Drone Ecosystem
Operation Sindoor also reflected India’s emergence as a global drone power. The Drone Federation of India (DFI), which represents over 550 companies and 5,500 drone pilots, has been pivotal in developing indigenous drone technology. Companies like Alpha Design Technologies, Tata Advanced Systems, Paras Defence, and IG Drones have contributed to defence-grade drones and surveillance tools.
This transformation has been catalysed by the government’s 2021 Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for drones and components. Banning imported drones and incentivising domestic manufacturing have helped Indian firms take giant strides in drone warfare capability.
India’s evolving military strength is deeply rooted in the “Make in India” initiative. Indigenous defence production reached a record ₹1.27 lakh crore in FY 2023-24, with exports rising to ₹23,622 crore — a 34-fold jump since 2013-14. The goal is to push exports to ₹50,000 crore by 2029.
Platforms like the LCA Tejas, Prachand helicopters, Arjun MBT, and the ATAGS artillery system are examples of this shift. The iDEX innovation program, Defence Industrial Corridors in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, and strategic partnerships with private players have all accelerated this transformation.
