Atishi Marlena is all set to take over as Delhi’s new Chief Minister. She is the only woman minister in Delhi’s cabinet and holds the maximum number of portfolios in the current Delhi government. Atishi Marlena will be Delhi’s third women Chief Minister after Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit.
Here’s a look at the other two woman Chief Ministers of Delhi, who have held the position in the past:
Sushma Swaraj: A Historic First
In 1998, Sushma Swaraj made history by becoming the first woman Chief Minister of Delhi. A leader known for her strong personality and bold decisions, was also the first woman Chief Ministerial candidate from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Her tenure, though brief—lasting just 52 days—was significant. Swaraj’s political career continued to flourish, and she remains one of the most respected female leaders in Indian politics. Her legacy was followed by another strong woman, Sheila Dikshit, who succeeded her.
Sheila Dikshit: The Face of Delhi’s Transformation
Sheila Dikshit, a veteran leader of the Congress party, assumed office after Swaraj and went on to serve as Chief Minister for three consecutive terms, from 1998 to 2013. Her 15-year tenure is credited with transforming Delhi into the cosmopolitan capital it is today. Dikshit’s leadership was credited to lead the expansion of infrastructure, improved public transportation, and major developments in education and healthcare. Dikshit’s dedication and long-term vision left a lasting impression on the capital, marking her as one of the most influential leaders in the national political arena.
Atishi Marlena: A Modern Education Reformer Turned Chief Minister
Atishi Marlena Singh, a leader from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has now made her own mark as she will become Delhi’s third woman Chief Minister. Known for her educational reforms and progressive leadership, Atishi rose to prominence through her work in revamping Delhi’s public schools.
As the third woman political leader to become Delhi’s new Chief Minister, Atishi will also be the second woman after Mamata Banerjee to sit on the Chief Minister’s chair currently.
