New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday reviewed the flood situation in Maharashtra and Gujarat by speaking separately with Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Bhupendra Patel, assuring both states of full assistance from the Centre.
Shah also spoke with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah as heavy rainfall affected parts of the Union Territory.
In Maharashtra, torrential rain disrupted daily life in Mumbai, delaying local train services and affecting commuters. Long-distance trains to Gujarat remained affected due to waterlogging on the Vasai-Virar section, while services on the Mumbai-Pune route were yet to fully resume after landslides in the Bhor Ghat section.
Tulsi Lake, one of Mumbai’s seven drinking water reservoirs, began overflowing following heavy rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast intermittent light to moderate rain in the city and suburbs.
Southern Gujarat witnessed extremely heavy rainfall, with Surat district the worst hit. Five people died in rain-related incidents, including four due to electrocution, while around 2,100 residents were evacuated from flooded areas.
Kamrej taluka recorded 305 mm of rainfall in just 10 hours, prompting the closure of schools and colleges in Surat and Navsari.
In Jammu and Kashmir, flash floods triggered by heavy rain damaged houses, shops and vehicles in Doda district and blocked the Doda-Kishtwar highway.
It was the third such incident in the Doda-Kishtwar region this week, disrupting normal life and transport.
