An Army officer from 48 Rashtriya Rifles was killed during an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district on Wednesday, 14 August.
The Captain was killed in action during the ongoing Op Assar in Doda district. He was leading a search party during the operation, which was launched to capture the terrorists.
One terrorist has been gunned down by security forces in the ongoing Doda encounter, says a Defence Officials, according to reports.
The Army had been tipped off to the terrorists’ hideout on 13 August evening, after which they engaged the enemy. There was a brief exchange of fire that night, and the op resumed this morning, as reported by the media.
The security forces have recovered four rucksacks and M-4 carbines from the encounter site.
Meanwhile, earlier today, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh chaired a high-level meeting on the ‘rising terror-related incidents’ in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting, held at the South Block in New Delhi, was attended by top officials National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval and Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi.
The past few months have witnessed an increase in terrorist activities in the Jammu region.
According to a report submitted by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to the Lok Sabha in July, “28 people, including civilians and security personnel, were killed in 11 terror-related incidents and 24 counter-terror operations up to July 21 this year.”
The security forces across the union territory have been placed on high alert ahead of Independence Day to ensure public safety.
