Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi on Tuesday described the current situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China as “sensitive and not normal.” Addressing the Chanakya Defence Dialogue, the General emphasized that while the border situation remains stable, India seeks a return to the conditions that existed before the tensions erupted in April 2020
General Dwivedi referred to China’s attempt in 2020 to transgress the LAC, which was effectively countered by Indian forces. Despite this, tensions continue to simmer, particularly in the eastern Ladakh region. The standoff has taken a toll on the relationship between the two nations, with diplomatic ties increasingly strained. Last week, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar remarked that the bilateral relationship with China was “very significantly disturbed.”
General Dwivedi noted that the current conditions along the LAC demand both military readiness and diplomatic efforts. “With China, you have to compete, cooperate, coexist, confront, and contest,” he stated. He further stressed the importance of restoring the situation at the LAC to its pre-April 2020 status, which would include resolving the issue of buffer zones and resuming planned patrols.
India and China have been engaging in diplomatic and military talks to resolve the standoff. Two rounds of diplomatic negotiations were held in July and August this year to address the lingering issues at the LAC, particularly in the Ladakh region.
Since the standoff began in 2020, multiple rounds of negotiations have led to partial disengagement at some friction points, but a complete resolution of the border dispute has remained elusive.
