The Karnataka High Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the stampede that occurred outside Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday, which claimed the lives of eleven people during celebrations of Royal Challengers Bangalore’s first-ever IPL title win in 18 years.

According to media reports, a bench led by Acting Chief Justice V Kameshwara Rao and Justice CM Joshi will hear the case. The court expressed deep concern over the tragic loss of lives, calling the incident “deeply distressing,” and stressed that it is treating the matter with utmost seriousness. It has asked the state government to submit details of the security arrangements in place at the time.
Appearing before the court, Advocate General Shashikiran Shetty assured the bench that the state will follow all court directions. He said the government will submit a detailed report on the incident and the measures taken in its aftermath. A magisterial inquiry has also been initiated. The hearing is scheduled for 2:30 PM today.
The stampede occurred while the RCB team was being felicitated inside the stadium following their victory over Punjab Kings in the IPL final on Tuesday. Outside, the crowd rose uncontrollably. Thousands of enthusiastic fans waving RCB’s red flags mobilised on the roads and stadium gates, eager to see the players. Visuals showed fans climbing trees, clambering onto the vehicles standing outside the stadium, and surging at the entrance, eventually leading to chaos.
As per the reports, all the victims of the stampede tragedy are under 40, with a 13-year-old being the youngest. Among those dead are three teenagers and six people in the 20–30-year age group.
