A JP Morgan developer, Kartik Jolapara, has ignited a conversation online about compensation in the tech industry. Jolapara shared a screenshot of an anonymous Google job offer that caught his attention, captioning it “crazy offers.”
The offer was made to an individual with ten years of experience who graduated from a tier 3 college with a non-computer science background. The post quickly gained traction on X (formerly Twitter), drawing mixed reactions from the tech community.
The individual was offered the role of Senior Software Engineer at Google, with a total first-year compensation package of Rs 1.64 crore. This includes a base salary of Rs 65 lakh per annum, a Rs 9 lakh annual bonus, a Rs 19 lakh signing bonus, and a Rs 5 lakh relocation bonus.
Despite these seemingly impressive figures, many online users were underwhelmed, with some claiming that similar or better offers are common in the industry, even for candidates with fewer years of experience.
One user was quick to downplay the excitement, stating, “Am I the only one who’s not thrilled looking at these numbers? I mean, aren’t they common in tech? Am I missing something?”
Others in the tech community weighed in with varying opinions. “The Google offer is 1.64 crore for the first year. Not crazy for 10 years, but still pretty good,” one commenter noted.
Another user pointed out that while the offer was substantial, it wasn’t the most competitive. “To be very honest, not impressed with the numbers. I’ve seen better by the same company. But I’m happy for him. 10 years experience and L5 requires a lot of expertise.”
