BJP’s shrinking ‘state’ politicalscape

Date:

As the results of the Jharkhand state elections results were announced on Monday, the BJP received a setback. JMM-Congress-RJD alliance won as counting of votes for 81 Jharkhand Assembly seats happened on Monday in all the 24 district headquarters.

Is this an indication of BJP’s falling ‘State’ hold? Or is it a result of anti-incumbency, that could be leading them to this outcome?

The changing face of BJP ruled states from November 2018 to December 2019

Let us look at their political journey starting with the victory in the General Elections of 2014.

By November 2018, the BJP and its allies had the following states under its control,
1. Arunachal Pradesh
2. Assam
3. Bihar
4. Chhattisgarh
5. Goa
6. Gujarat
7. Haryana
8. Himachal Pradesh
9. Jharkhand
10. Madhya Pradesh
11. Maharashtra
12. Manipur
13. Meghalaya
14. Mizoram
15. Nagaland
16. Rajasthan
17. Sikkim
18. Tripura
19. Uttarakhand
20. Uttar Pradesh

From December 2018 to December 2019, the party and the alliance lost in the following states:
1. Chhattisgarh
2. Jharkhand
3. Madhya Pradesh
4. Maharashtra
5. Rajasthan

In December 2019, the BJP gained in the state of Karnataka. As of December 2019, they are in control of 16 states.

But one thing remains, BJP might be the single largest party in the country with a majority
seat victory that led it to its second term, but at the state level, it needs to re-think its
strategy.

From anti-incumbency to real-world issues of the common man that need addressal, BJP and its allies will have to work towards a common agenda to retain power in the states that are yet to go to polls.
