New Delhi: Former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has approached the Delhi High Court, challenging the ongoing trial court proceedings against him in connection with a Delhi Police FIR. The FIR was filed based on complaints from several women wrestlers who accused Singh of sexual harassment and outraging the modesty of women.
Singh’s petition seeks to contest the continuation of these legal proceedings, including the chargesheet and the trial court’s order related to the framing of charges against him. He has requested the Delhi High Court to quash the entire legal process, including the FIR and the trial court order, arguing that there is insufficient evidence to proceed with the charges.
The Bench of Justice Neena Bansal Krishna is scheduled to hear Singh’s petition on Thursday. This comes after a trial court recently recorded the statement of one of the complainant women wrestlers in a vulnerable witness room. The court has also directed the city police to promptly reinstate the security of another female wrestler who accused Singh of sexual harassment.
On May 10, the trial court, presided over by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Priyanka Rajpoot, ordered the framing of charges against Singh and Vinod Tomar, based on the allegations made by several women wrestlers. The court found sufficient material to proceed with the charges of sexual harassment and outraging the modesty of five women wrestlers.
The Delhi Police had filed a chargesheet against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and Vinod Tomar on June 15 of last year.
