Centre Appoints Justice Sanjiv Khanna As Next Chief Justice Of India

Date:

New Delhi: The Central Government on Thursday announced the appointment of Justice Sanjiv Khanna as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI), with his term scheduled to commence on November 11, 2024.

Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to announce the news. “In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, Hon’ble President, after consultation with Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge of the Supreme Court of India as Chief Justice of India with effect from 11th November, 2024,” Meghwal wrote.

Justice Khanna is set to succeed the current CJI, DY Chandrachud, who recommended his name to the government. Justice Khanna will become the 51st Chief Justice of India and will hold office until May 13, 2025, marking a nearly seven-month tenure.

Born on May 14, 1960, into a distinguished legal family, Justice Khanna’s legacy in law is noteworthy. His father, Justice Devraj Khanna, served as a judge of the Delhi High Court, while his uncle, Justice Hansraj Khanna, was a prominent Supreme Court judge.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna’s academic journey began at Modern School, Barakhamba Road in Delhi, followed by a graduation from the University of Delhi in 1980. He later pursued his law degree from the university’s Campus Law Center.

Justice Khanna started his legal career by enrolling with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1983. He practiced at the Tis Hazari district courts before moving to the Delhi High Court and various tribunals. Throughout his career, he held significant roles, including Senior Standing Counsel for the Income Tax Department and Standing Counsel (Civil) for the National Capital Territory of Delhi in 2004.

His elevation to the Supreme Court came on January 18, 2019, from the Delhi High Court, where he had already made a mark with his judicial acumen. During his tenure in the Supreme Court, Justice Khanna was part of several Constitution Benches that dealt with high-profile cases, such as the Electoral Bond Scheme, the repeal of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, and the bail plea of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
