In a significant breakthrough, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday announced that she has accepted three of the five key demands of the protesting junior doctors. After the crucial meeting with the agitating doctors, CM Banerjee agreed to remove two senior officials from the state’s health department, deputy commissioner (north) Abhishek Gupta and Kolkata Police commissioner Vineet Goyal.
A Task Force for the safety of doctors will also be constituted, with the goal of improving security measures at hospitals and addressing concerns raised by the medical community. Furthermore, the Rogi Kalyan Samity, which oversees the functioning of hospitals, will be reconstituted.

The long-standing deadlock between the West Bengal government and protesting junior doctors took a step forward, as a crucial meeting between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the agitating medics concluded after nearly two hours of discussion.
- Earlier, a delegation of the agitating doctors arrived at CM Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat for a fresh round of talks. After two earlier meetings failed to yield any resolution, the West Bengal government extended “fifth and final invitation for talks.”
- The protest, which centers around the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has sparked a month-long cease work by junior doctors across state-run hospitals.
- West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant extended the invitation, requesting the junior doctors to meet at 5 pm at the Chief Minister’s residence in Kalighat. While the protesting doctors welcomed the opportunity to engage in dialogue, they expressed reservations about the venue, suggesting an official and neutral administrative location would be more appropriate for such discussions.
- In their response to the government’s invitation, the junior doctors outlined a set of conditions aimed at ensuring transparency during the meeting. They proposed that the video of the meeting should be provided immediately afterward, rather than awaiting approval from the Supreme Court, as initially suggested by the government
- Additionally, the doctors called for detailed minutes of the meeting to be recorded, with transcripts signed by all participants before the meeting concludes.
- One of the key issues driving the protest is the recent arrest of Dr. Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College, and Abhijit Mondal, officer-in-charge of Tala police station.
- Both have been implicated in tampering with evidence related to the case, prompting the doctors to push for greater transparency in the investigation.
On Saturday, the standoff between the West Bengal government and protesting doctors intensified as the agitating medics declined to enter Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence, insisting on a live telecast of the meeting.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, addressing the doctors outside her residence, said, “The video footage of the meeting would be shared with due permission from the Hon’ble Supreme Court.”

A delegation of 15 junior doctors reached CM Banerjee’s residence on Saturday to hold discussion. The meeting comes as tensions continue to rise amid the junior doctors’ ongoing protests following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital.
CM Banerjee visited the protest site in front of Swasthya Bhavan on Saturday, where she engaged with the agitating doctors and assured them that their demands would be heard and addressed. The chief minister promised to take necessary steps to meet their demands, including ensuring justice for the victim and improving safety measures within hospitals.
