Chandigarh: Punjab Congress MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has sought a ban on an upcoming documentary series based on jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, alleging that it glorifies crime and undermines the suffering of victims.
The series, slated for release on ZEE5 on April 27, has triggered political and public backlash in Punjab. Warring said he will move court through a Public Interest Litigation if the platform does not halt or postpone its release.
Objecting to the show’s promotional material, he argued that it appears to be based on Bishnoi’s life and could promote unlawful activities. He also cited concerns under the Information Technology Rules, 2021, warning of potential impact on public order.
The demand has been supported by Balkaur Singh, father of slain singer Sidhu Moose Wala, who opposed portraying gangsters in mainstream content. He said such narratives could mislead youth and distract from the contributions of national figures like Bhagat Singh.
Singh also raised concerns over the lack of justice in his son’s killing, alleging that accused individuals continue to receive undue privileges.
The controversy has revived debate over the depiction of real-life criminals in films and digital content, with critics warning that such portrayals risk romanticising violence while ignoring its consequences.
Bishnoi, who faces multiple criminal cases, has remained in the spotlight, including over alleged threats to actor Salman Khan.
The issue is expected to see further legal developments as opposition to the series grows.
