Congress Unveils Manifesto For Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections

Date:

As the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections draw near, the Congress party on Monday released its much-anticipated manifesto. The manifesto comes just ahead of the first phase of polling, scheduled for September 18, 2024.

One of the central promises in the manifesto is the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, which has been a key demand in the region since its special status was revoked. The Congress party has vowed to ensure the region regains its statehood.

KEY PROMISES

  • The manifesto promises Rs 3,000 monthly financial assistance to women heads of households. Additionally, under the Sakhi Shakti initiative, interest-free loans up to Rs 5 lakhs will be available for women-led Self Help Groups.
  • Congress pledges to fully restore Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.
  • Congress also plans to provide an additional income support of Rs 4,000 annually to landless, tenant, and land-owning farming households, aimed at boosting the region’s agricultural sector.
  • The manifesto includes full implementation of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s rehabilitation plan for Kashmiri Pandits, addressing a long-standing issue of displacement.
  • Congress also promises to ensure full constitutional rights for backward classes, promising equal opportunities and access to government benefits.
  • To tackle the issue of unemployment, the party has promised to fill 1 lakh vacant government positions across the region.
  • Congress promised 11 kg of ration per family member. The manifesto also mentions the introduction of an insurance and pension policy for journalists, a sector that has faced significant challenges in recent years.
