India’s Covid-19 confirmed cases tally has crossed the 1 lakh mark. Significantly, it took 110 days for the cases to cross 1 lakh in India, which is comparatively much slower than several countries across the globe. But the worrying sign is that India has been reporting a higher average of cases daily now than it was a few weeks back.
While India’s first 10,000 cases were reported in 76 days, the most recent 10,000 cases have just taken two days. The average increase in the number of cases being reported daily is also partially due to the enhanced numbers of tests that are now being done.

As per the latest Health Ministry figures, India now has 1,01,139 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and has already witnessed 3,163 deaths due to the virus. Of the total cases, 58,802 are currently active cases while 39,173 have recovered.
The fact that it took 110 days for cases to cross the 1 lakh mark in India is important given the fact that this mark was crossed in much lesser time by many countries around the world. Italy, one of the worst affected countries, for instance, saw its cases cross the 1 lakh mark in 60 days. Spain took 61 days to reach 1 lakh cases, the United States took 66 days, Germany 70 days, the United Kingdom 77 days and France took 80 days to touch the 1 lakh mark.
It has been argued that the number of detected cases in India can be low due to fewer tests having been conducted so far. Starting from around 4,000-5,000 tests a day, India is now conducting around 1 lakh tests every day. In all, over 24 lakhs samples have been tested so far in the country.
India has become the eleventh country to report more than 1 lakh cases. With over 15 lakh cases, United States has the maximum Covid-19 cases in the world, followed by Russia (over 2.9 lakh cases), Brazil (over 2.55 lakh cases), United Kingdom (over 2.47 lakh cases), Spain (over 2.31 lakh cases), Italy (over 2.25 lakh cases), France (over 1.8 lakh cases), Germany (over 1.76 lakh cases), Turkey (over 1.5 lakh cases) and Iran (over 1.22 lakh cases).
