Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury is in the Intensive Care Unit of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. He is currently undergoing treatment for a severe lung infection and is under respiratory support.
“He is on respiratory support. A multi-disciplinary team of doctors is closely monitoring his condition, which is critical at this time,” CPI said in an official release.

The 72-year-old was admitted to AIIMS in mid-August. The hospital did not reveal the nature of his ailment. The party said a multidisciplinary team of doctors is currently closely monitoring Yechury’s condition, which is critical at this time.
Who is Sitaram Yechury?
In 1975, Sitaram Yechury joined the party after becoming a member of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI).
While he was still a student at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), he was arrested during Emergency.
Yechury served as president of the JNU Students’ Union thrice between 1977 and 1988.
The famous duo Yechury and Prakash Karat are credited with strengthening the leftist presence at JNU.
