CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury Passes Away at 72

New Delhi: Senior CPI(M) leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Sitaram Yechury passed away on Thursday at the age of 72. The veteran politician had been undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi.

The CPI(M) leader, was initially admitted to the emergency ward at AIIMS before being transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). He was receiving intensive care for a severe respiratory tract infection and had spent the past few days on respiratory support, as per reports.

AIIMS in a statement confirmed that Yechury, aged 72, passed away at 3:05 pm on Thursday.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) has announced plans for a public homage to honor Yechury. On September 14, Yechury’s body will be available for public viewing at the CPI(M) headquarters, A.K. Gopalan Bhavan, located at Gole Market, New Delhi. The public can pay their respects between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM.

After the period of public homage, Yechury’s body will be transported to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), where it will be donated for medical research in accordance with his wishes.

Yechury, a prominent face of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), took over as the party’s general secretary in 2015, succeeding Prakash Karat. Yechury became a member of the party’s Politburo in 1992, serving as a key figure in its leadership for decades. His political journey began early, when at the age of 22, he joined the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) in 1974. Yechury also represented West Bengal in the Rajya Sabha for three terms.

Political Reactions

The leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi expressed grief over the death of the CPI (M) leader.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed grief over Yechury’s demise.

CPI General Secretary D Raja expressed his condolences over Yechury’s death.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also expressed his condolences.

 

Congress President and Leader Of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge expressed his condolences. Kharge praised Yechury as an exemplary parliamentarian and intellectual who served India with a blend of pragmatism and idealism.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also mourned the death of the CPI(M) leader.
