Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed serious concern after reports emerged alleging a Ukraine-led strike on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s residence in the Novgorod region. In a post on X, Modi said he was “deeply concerned” by claims that the Russian President’s state residence had been targeted, adding that only sustained diplomatic engagement can pave the way toward de-escalation and peace. He urged all sides to avoid actions that could inflame tensions further.
The remarks came shortly after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov alleged that Ukraine launched 91 long-range drones towards the site between December 28 and 29—an operation he described as “reckless.” Lavrov warned that the incident would inevitably shape Moscow’s position in ongoing negotiations.

The development also prompted reactions from global leaders. US President Donald Trump, who has been attempting to mediate between the two nations, told reporters he was “very angry” after Putin personally informed him about the alleged strike during a phone call. “It’s one thing to be offensive. It’s another to attack his house,” Trump said.
China also weighed in, urging all parties to prevent any “spillover” of the conflict and to avoid further escalation, according to comments from its foreign ministry quoted by Reuters.
