Delhi Govt Fast-Tracks Trunk Drain Work to End Waterlogging Woes

Date:

The Delhi government has launched an ambitious push to provide permanent relief from chronic waterlogging by accelerating construction of four major trunk drains under its updated Drainage Master Plan, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced.

The priority projects include the Mundka Halt-Supplementary Drain, MB Road Storm Water Drain, Kirari-Rithala Trunk Drain and the Storm Water Drain along Rohtak Road (NH-10). These are designed to significantly enhance drainage capacity, ensure swift discharge of rainwater into the Yamuna, and reduce pressure on overloaded sewer networks that have traditionally caused flooding across parts of the capital during monsoons.

Gupta noted the city’s Drainage Master Plan, first drafted in the 1970s, had not kept pace with Delhi’s rapid urban growth, contributing to persistent flooding issues. The current effort reconfigures drainage infrastructure based on modern hydrological needs and population pressures.

Officials highlighted a 4.5-km trunk drain being built parallel to the railway line to tackle flooding in Kirari, Mundka, Bawana and Nangloi constituencies, at an estimated cost of ₹220.93 crore, with capacity to serve a catchment of around 1,520 acres.

Authorities say once all projects are completed, much of the capital can expect sustained relief from waterlogging, marking a long-awaited upgrade to Delhi’s stormwater infrastructure.
