Delhi HC Refuses Sonam Wangchuk’s Hospital Transfer

Date:

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Sunday declined to order the immediate transfer of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta Hospital. The plea seeking his transfer was filed by his wife, Gitanjali Angmo.

The court directed the Centre and the doctors treating Wangchuk to submit a status report on his health within three days and scheduled the next hearing for July 24.

“Sonam Wangchuk will cooperate with doctors, if he so chooses, I am not directing,” the court stated.

During the hearing, the Centre told the court that Wangchuk’s wife has round-the-clock access to him and said he is not under detention. The High Court also observed that his family members have been allowed to meet him.

The Centre further said Wangchuk could also be shifted to AIIMS Delhi if required and expressed confidence in treatment at government hospitals.

Doctors informed the court that Wangchuk has accepted oral fluids, potassium chloride, and sugar-free ORS but has refused intravenous fluids. They added that his potassium and sugar levels are at the lower end of the normal range and said he requires vitamins and continuous medical assessment.
