New Delhi: The Delhi Police has registered at least three FIRs in connection with the protest near Jantar Mantar on October 2 against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Two cases have been registered at the Parliament Street police station and another at the Connaught Place police station. The FIRs invoke Sections 223, 221, 132 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), relating to alleged violations of prohibitory orders, obstruction of public servants and unlawful assembly.
The police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the demonstration, which was organised as part of the opposition’s campaign over the functioning of the Election Commission and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
The protesters had gathered near Jantar Mantar demanding Kumar’s removal and raising allegations concerning electoral roll revisions. Police had denied permission for the demonstration and imposed restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023.
Several opposition leaders and supporters were detained during the demonstration, including Aam Aadmi Party MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj.
The protest came amid reports that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections on multiple occasions over a 10-month period regarding decisions related to electoral rolls, voter registration and the Election Commission’s technology systems.
