New Delhi: Delhi has reported 1,777 H1N1 influenza cases this year, including 114 new cases on August 20, with Influenza A accounting for most seasonal flu infections.
The Delhi government recorded 2,602 Influenza A and B cases cumulatively till August 20, including 2,392 Influenza A cases and 210 Influenza B cases.
Of the Influenza A cases, H1N1 accounted for 1,777, while H1 and H3 recorded 37 and 138 cases respectively, with 440 classified under other types. H3N2 was the predominant subtype in Delhi last year.
Amid concerns over the rise, ICMR scientists said no new H1N1 strain has been detected in India. The circulating H1N1 pdm09 viruses belong to the A/Missouri/11/2025-like strain, clade 6B.1A.5a2a, subclade D.3.1.1, which has circulated since 2025. They said the viruses match vaccine strains recommended for the Northern Hemisphere and there is no cause for panic.
Most seasonal influenza cases are self-limiting, but children, elderly people and those with underlying conditions face higher risks of complications.
Delhi authorities are strengthening surveillance across 35 hospitals, with AIIMS and NCDC designated as referral laboratories.
Residents have been advised to maintain respiratory hygiene, wear masks in crowded places, wash hands and seek medical care if symptoms worsen.
