In a decisive move to curb air pollution, the Delhi government will prohibit fuel stations from supplying petrol to vehicles older than 15 years after March 31, Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa announced on Saturday. The measure is part of a broader strategy to reduce vehicular emissions, one of the primary contributors to the capital’s worsening air quality.
To enforce the new rule, the government will install specialized identification gadgets at petrol pumps to detect vehicles that exceed the 15-year age limit. “Once implemented, no fuel will be dispensed to such vehicles,” said Sirsa, adding that the Delhi administration would formally inform the Union Ministry of Petroleum about the move.

Apart from restricting fuel supply to outdated vehicles, the government is also taking stringent steps to control emissions from commercial and residential structures. Sirsa announced that all high-rise buildings, hotels, and commercial complexes in the city must install anti-smog guns to help mitigate pollution levels.
In a significant shift toward sustainable public transport, nearly 90% of Delhi’s CNG-powered public buses will be phased out by December 2025 and replaced with electric buses. This measure comes as Delhi continues to struggle with poor air quality, particularly during winter months when smog and particulate matter levels spike.
