Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir are engaged in a fierce encounter with terrorists in the Tangmarg area of Kulgam district, just a day after a devastating terror attack in Pahalgam left 26 tourists dead. The ongoing gunfight reportedly involves a top commander of The Resistance Front (TRF), a group believed to be behind Tuesday’s massacre and a proxy outfit of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba.
According to officials, the encounter broke out late Wednesday evening as security personnel closed in on a suspected hideout in south Kashmir’s Kulgam. A senior TRF operative is said to be trapped, and heavy firing is underway from both sides.
This high-stakes operation comes on the heels of another successful counterterrorism action earlier in the day. In north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, the Indian Army foiled an infiltration attempt near the Line of Control (LoC), killing two terrorists in a brief but intense exchange of fire.
Further details are awaited.
