Kolkata: A complaint has been submitted to Kolkata Police seeking legal action against former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee over remarks allegedly made during a political gathering ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election campaign.
According to the complaint filed at Netaji Nagar Police Station on May 20, Kolkata resident Tushar Kanti Das alleged that statements made during the public event could create fear, confusion, and tension among different communities in the state.
The complainant claimed that while warning voters about what she described as the Bharatiya Janata Party’s “misleading publicity,” Banerjee allegedly made comments that could be interpreted as suggesting negative consequences for a particular community if voting patterns changed. The complaint argues that the remarks were unclear in reference and may generate insecurity among citizens.
The petition further describes the statements as “provocative” and “inflammatory,” alleging that they could affect communal harmony and public order. It also claims that some incidents of communal violence reported in Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal after elections may have been influenced by the speech.
However, the complaint does not provide evidence directly connecting those incidents to the alleged remarks.
