Comedian Kunal Kamra is back making headlines again. The stand-up comedian sparked outrage for making jokes about Shiv Sena leader and Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. But controversies and Kunal Kamra go hand-in-hand. Let’s take a look at five instances when Kamra ruffled feathers in the past.
Up In The Air With Arnab Goswami
In 2020, Kamra met Goswami on a flight from Mumbai to Lucknow. Kamra posted a video on X screaming at the journalist and calling him a “Coward.” While not a formal legal case, this incident sparked widespread discussion. For six months, Kamra was banned from major airlines like IndiGo, Air India, GoAir and SpiceJet.
Criticism Of Election Commission And EVMs
Kamra mocked the Election Commission and the use of EVMs (electronic voting machines) in various posts and videos. This led to complaints from political groups, although no legal action was officially confirmed.
Ola, Kamra!
Kamra had publicly criticised Ola Electric and CEO Bhavish Aggarwal, accusing them of providing subpar support and services for Ola electric scooter owners. He requested that Union Minister Nitin Gadkari intervene.
‘Brahmin-Baniya’ Remark
In May 2020, a petition was filed in the Supreme Court against Kamra for his remark that the Supreme Court was a “Brahmin-Baniya” affair in his show ‘Be Like’. The petition was filed as an intervention application in a pending contempt of court case against Kamra. Attorney-General KK Venugopal had approved a contempt proceeding against Kamra for allegedly disparaging the judiciary and judges through his social media posts.
The ‘Kashmir Files‘
In 2022, lawyer Chandni Preeti Vijaykumar Shah wrote to Attorney General KK Venugopal seeking to initiate criminal proceedings against the comedian under the State Emblem of India (Prohibition of Improper Use) Act, 2005. Kamra insulted India’s national emblem by using it in a morphed certificate that shamed the agony of the Kashmiri Pandit genocide and blatantly mocked the film ‘The Kashmir Files’, the lawyer said.
