Jagdeep Dhankhar, who recently resigned from the post of Vice President of India citing health concerns, has led a remarkable journey from the rural heartland of Rajasthan to the heights of national leadership. Known for his sharp legal mind, political versatility, and institutional leadership, Dhankhar has left an indelible mark on Indian public life.

Early Life and Education

Born on May 18, 1951, in Kithana village, Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan, Jagdeep Dhankhar’s story is one of determination and academic excellence. He completed his B.Sc. (Hons) in Physics from Maharaja’s College, Jaipur, and later earned an LLB from the University of Rajasthan in 1978–79.

A Distinguished Legal Career

Dhankhar began practising law on November 10, 1979, after enrolling with the Bar Council of Rajasthan. His legal acumen quickly earned him recognition, and by 1990, he was designated a Senior Advocate by the Rajasthan High Court.

He built a robust legal career primarily in the Supreme Court of India, handling key cases in steel, coal, mining, and international commercial arbitration. He also appeared in multiple High Courts across the country and was considered the senior-most designated Senior Advocate in Rajasthan until he took up gubernatorial responsibilities.

Political Debut and Parliamentary Journey

Jagdeep Dhankhar made his political debut in 1989, winning the Jhunjhunu Lok Sabha seat as a member of the Janata Dal. He was appointed Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs in the Chandra Shekhar government (1990–1991).

In 1993, Dhankhar was elected to the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly from Kishangarh (Ajmer) and served on several key committees, both in Parliament and the state assembly. His diplomatic experience includes leading a delegation as Deputy Leader of the Indian Parliamentary Group to the European Parliament.

Governor of West Bengal

Dhankhar’s appointment as Governor of West Bengal in July 2019 marked a significant phase in his career. His tenure was eventful and often contentious, as he locked horns with the state government on several constitutional matters. He held the post until July 2022, when he was nominated for the vice-presidential election.

Vice President of India

Jagdeep Dhankhar was elected the 14th Vice President of India in August 2022, defeating Opposition candidate Margaret Alva. As Vice President, he also served as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, where he gained attention for his assertive stance in upholding procedural rules and engaging in heated debates on parliamentary conduct.

He resigned from the post on July 21, 2025, citing health reasons and a need to follow medical advice.

Beyond Politics and Law

Outside of his legal and political pursuits, Dhankhar has shown a strong interest in sports and institutional governance: Former President of the Rajasthan Olympic Association, Former President of the Rajasthan Tennis Association, Life member of the Indian Law Institute, Ex-officio Chancellor of Delhi University and Panjab University.

Family and Personal Life

Jagdeep Dhankhar is married to Dr. Sudesh Dhankhar. The couple has one daughter, Kamna. Despite the demanding nature of his career, Dhankhar has maintained a close bond with his family and rural roots.
