From Indo-Pak Wars To Op Sindoor: A Look At the Indian Air Force’s Pivotal Role

Date:

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has been a cornerstone of India’s defence strategy since its inception. From its early days during the 1947 conflict to the high-tech precision strikes of Operation Sindoor in 2025, the IAF’s evolution reflects its adaptability, resilience, and unwavering commitment to national security.

1947–48 Kashmir Conflict

In October 1947, as tribal forces backed by Pakistan advanced into Jammu and Kashmir, the newly formed IAF faced its first major test. With limited resources, the IAF executed airlifts to Srinagar, delivering troops and supplies to bolster the state’s defence.

While the war eventually concluded with a UN-mediated ceasefire, the IAF’s role in these initial operations laid the foundation for its future strategic and logistical proficiency.

1965 Indo-Pak War

By 1965, the IAF had grown in strength and capability. During this conflict, which was sparked by Pakistan’s Operation Gibraltar, the IAF conducted numerous sorties to establish air superiority over the Pakistan Air Force. Aircraft like the Folland Gnat, Hawker Hunter, and Mystere were used effectively against PAF fighters.

The IAF carried out precision bombing and close air support missions, which were collectively part of the 1965 air operations, helping to support Indian ground forces in the critical battles along the western front.

1971 Indo-Pak War (Bangladesh Liberation War)

The 1971 war, which led to the creation of Bangladesh, highlighted the IAF’s strategic depth and precision. The IAF launched Operation Trident and Operation Python, targeting key Pakistani naval and air assets. The IAF’s decisive airstrikes contributed significantly to India’s victory.

The IAF conducted coordinated strikes on Pakistani airbases, crippling the PAF’s operational capabilities. Notably, the destruction of five F-86 Sabres on the ground at Murid airbase underscored the IAF’s effectiveness in preemptive strikes. The IAF’s dominance in the air was a decisive factor in India’s swift victory.

Operation Meghdoot

In 1984, India undertook Operation Meghdoot to secure the Siachen Glacier before Pakistani forces could establish a presence. The IAF’s role was crucial in airlifting troops, supplies, and equipment to extremely high-altitude posts, often under severe weather conditions.

Kargil War (1999)

The high-altitude Kargil conflict tested the IAF’s precision strike capabilities under challenging conditions. The air operations, collectively called Operation Safed Sagar, involved deploying Mirage 2000s, MiG-27s, and MiG-21s to neutralise enemy positions along the Kargil heights.

Simultaneously, the Indian Navy executed Operation Talwar, blockading Pakistani ports to cut off supplies. The IAF’s close air support was instrumental in reclaiming key positions and restoring territorial integrity.

Counter-Terrorism

The early 2000s saw the IAF supporting Operation Parakram (2001) during large-scale mobilisation along the India-Pakistan border, showcasing deterrence.

In retaliation for a suicide bombing in Pulwama that killed 40 Indian paramilitary personnel in 2019, India launched airstrikes on a Jaish-e-Mohammed training camp in Balakot, Pakistan. The IAF’s Mirage 2000 aircraft carried out precision strikes, marking the first time since 1971 that India conducted airstrikes across the border.

Operation Sindoor (2025)

In the early hours of May 7, 2025, the Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Sindoor, a meticulously planned military response to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The operation aimed to neutralise terrorist infrastructure across Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, utilising a combination of advanced aircraft and innovative tactics.

  • The IAF deployed a range of frontline fighter jets, each fulfilling specific roles to ensure the success of the operation
  • Dassault Rafale: These multirole fighters conducted stand-off strikes using SCALP (Système de Croisière Autonome à Longue Portée) cruise missiles, targeting high-value terrorist camps with precision.
  • Mirage 2000: Equipped with Spice-2000 precision-guided munitions, these aircraft executed surgical strikes on entrenched targets, minimising collateral damage.
  • Sukhoi Su-30MKI: Serving as air superiority fighters, they provided combat air patrols and escorted strike packages, ensuring air dominance and protection against potential retaliatory actions.
  • Jaguar: Utilised for deep penetration strikes, these aircraft targeted enemy logistics and infrastructure, contributing to the disruption of terrorist operations.
  • To enhance the effectiveness of the operation, the IAF incorporated several innovative tactics. Approximately 15 BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles were launched at 11 major Pakistani Air Force bases.
  • Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and decoy aircraft were deployed to deceive enemy radar systems, creating confusion and overwhelming Pakistani defences. Advanced electronic warfare systems were employed to jam enemy communications and radar, disrupting Pakistani response capabilities.
  • The operation achieved its objectives with high precision. Over 100 terrorists were reported killed, and several key terrorist camps were destroyed, significantly degrading the operational capabilities of groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba.
  • Operation Sindoor served as a clear message of India’s resolve to counter cross-border terrorism, reinforcing its commitment to national security.
