India marks its 79th Independence Day today with celebrations across the country, while Google joined in by unveiling a special doodle highlighting the nation’s achievements — from “space missions and world chess titles, to cricketing glory and international film recognitions.”
The Doodle, created by artists Makarand Narkar and Sonal Vasave of Boomranng Studio, was designed to showcase India’s diverse cultural and artistic heritage.
“This Doodle celebrates India’s Independence Day. On this day in 1947, India gained its freedom after nearly two centuries of British rule, officially becoming a sovereign republic,” Google posted.
“The Indian Independence movement was led by prominent figures who championed civil disobedience and nonviolent protests. Their efforts culminated in the birth of the world’s largest democracy.”
Each of the six tiles in this year’s doodle reflects a unique regional art style, ranging from Rajasthan’s Jaipur blue pottery to West Bengal’s terracotta relief. The designs not only honour these traditional art forms but also commemorate key milestones in India’s national journey.
In 2024, Google celebrated Independence Day with a doodle focusing on the country’s architectural splendour. Designed by freelance art director, illustrator, and animator Vrinda Zaveri, it featured six doors and windows that represented India’s rich architectural traditions. The artwork incorporated intricate detailing in vibrant shades of blue, yellow, green, saffron, and brown, along with a small motif of the Indian Peacock — the national bird.
