Authorities have significantly ramped up security at the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar following a threatening email that warned of possible explosives within the sacred premises. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) confirmed on Monday that the email, which mentioned RDX and potential damage to the holy shrine, prompted an immediate and coordinated response between SGPC officials and the Punjab Police.
SGPC Chief Secretary Kulwant Singh Mannan said the warning email was taken very seriously, despite its vague nature. “While it may be a hoax intended to cause panic, we are not leaving anything to chance,” Mannan stated. He added that SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami was promptly briefed on the situation, and a review meeting was held to assess precautionary steps.
Local police, including the Station House Officer (SHO), visited the temple complex shortly after the email was received. Security patrols around key areas such as the parikrama (circumambulatory path) and galliara (the surrounding corridor) have been stepped up. Surveillance teams and SGPC staff have been instructed to maintain high alert and ensure the safety of devotees and temple property.
Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar confirmed that an FIR has been registered and investigations are underway. “We have deployed bomb disposal squads and anti-sabotage teams at the site. Senior officers are monitoring the situation closely to ensure complete security,” he said.
While the email reportedly mentioned Monday as a potential date for the attack, authorities said the timeline and details were unclear. Nonetheless, the threat is being handled with utmost seriousness, and security agencies remain on high alert.
