The Election Commission of India (ECI) has revised the polling date for Haryana from October 1 to October 5, 2024, and accordingly counting day for J&K and Haryana assembly elections from October 4 to October 8, 2024.
The poll body explained that this decision was made in consideration of the centuries-old festival celebrated by the Bishnoi community.
The Election Commission’s notification explained, “Subsequently, representations have been received from National Political Parties, State Political Party and All India Bishnoi Mahasabha regarding mass movement of people of Bishnoi community of Haryana to Rajasthan to participate in centuries old Asoj Amavasya festival celebration.”
The Commission expressed concerns that the festival might reduce voter turnout in Haryana, noting, “It may deny voting rights to large number of people and may lead to reduce voters’ participation in general election to legislative assembly of Haryana.”
The polling date for the third phase of the Jammu and Kashmir elections remains unchanged, set for October 1. Results for both Haryana and J&K elections are slated for October 8.
Haryana BJP’s Varinder Garg had previously argued that the original October 1 date might negatively impact voter turnout due to its proximity to a long weekend, suggesting that people might travel during that period.
The decision has drawn criticism from the opposition, with Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda accusing the BJP of fearing defeat, while the Aam Aadmi Party claimed the ruling BJP was already making excuses, anticipating its loss.
