On June 4, a tragic stampede occurred outside Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium during celebrations for Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) maiden IPL 2025 victory, resulting in 11 deaths and 47 injuries. The victims, all under 40 years old, were primarily young fans, including students and professionals, caught in the chaos due to overcrowding and inadequate crowd control. Below is a detailed account of the identified victims, based on available reports:
- Divyanshi (13): A 13-year-old schoolgirl, fondly called Dimple, who watched the IPL final late into Tuesday night, cheering for RCB. She was among the youngest victims, declared dead on arrival at Bowring Hospital.
- Shivalinga (17): A teenage boy, killed in the crush while trying to enter the stadium, was reported at Bowring Hospital.
- Manoj Kumar (18): An 18-year-old first-year college student at Presidency College, son of a pani puri vendor. His father, Manoj Kumar Sr., mourned, “I wanted him to go to college… Now, he is gone,” outside Bowring Hospital’s mortuary.
- Bhoomika (18): An 18-year-old college student, killed in the stampede, was reported at Vydehi Hospital.
- Chinmayi (19): A 19-year-old victim reported at Manipal (Vikram) Hospital.
- Sravan Kumar (20): A 20-year-old fan, among those killed, was reported at Bowring Hospital.
- Prajwal G (22): A 22-year-old engineering student died wearing an RCB shirt. His mother, at Vydehi Hospital, lamented, “Can RCB give him back to us?”
- Sahana (21): A 21-year-old new joinee at a multinational tech firm, left work early with seven colleagues to join the RCB celebrations. She died in the stampede, leaving her colleagues devastated at Vydehi Hospital.
- Poorna Chandra (25): A 25-year-old from K R Pet, Mandya district. Friends identified him in social media videos where people tried to revive him. His body was found at Vydehi Hospital after searches at Bowring.
- Akshata (26): A 26-year-old woman, among the victims, reported at Bowring Hospital.
- Devi (29): A 29-year-old woman, killed in the stampede, was reported at Bowring Hospital.
Dr Humera, the medical administrator at Vydehi Hospital, told The New Indian Express that most of the victims were young, between 20 to 30 years old. She confirmed that the likely cause of death in many cases was suffocation due to the stampede.
Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah announced Rs 10 lakh compensation for each victim’s family and free treatment for the injured, while the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) pledged Rs 5 lakh per family.
