Heavy Rain Brings Relief To Delhi-NCR, But Disrupts Traffic And Flights

Date:

Parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) witnessed heavy rainfall on Tuesday morning, bringing a much-needed respite from the recent hot and humid weather during the festive season.”

Noida and Ghaziabad, along with the national capital, also witnessed intense showers accompanied by strong winds.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the region is expected to remain mostly cloudy with spells of light rain or drizzle throughout the day.

The IMD has placed Delhi and Gurugram under an orange alert until 2:55 pm, while Noida and Ghaziabad remain under a yellow alert.

Waterlogging in the Capital

While the showers cooled down temperatures, they also caused waterlogging in several areas. The Zakhira underpass in Delhi was inundated, creating difficulties for commuters navigating through the area.

Airlines Issue Advisories

Air travel was also affected as airlines cautioned passengers about possible delays. IndiGo released an advisory warning that ongoing thunderstorms and persistent rainfall in Delhi could disrupt flight schedules.

“Persistent rainfall and thunderstorms are currently affecting #Delhi, leading to possible delays in flight operations. Our teams are closely monitoring the situation to ensure your journey resumes as soon as conditions improve,” the airline said in a post on X.

The carrier advised passengers to check flight status on its website or app before heading to the airport and recommended allowing extra travel time due to slowed road traffic. “We appreciate your continued patience and understanding. Your comfort and safety remain our top priority,” the airline added.

Air India also echoed similar concerns, informing travellers that flights to and from Delhi could face disruptions because of the weather. It asked passengers to stay updated online and leave earlier than usual, given the likelihood of traffic congestion.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Airport, in a statement issued at 11:56 am assured passengers that flight operations were running normally. “Our on-ground teams are working diligently with all stakeholders to ensure your journey remains hassle-free,” the advisory read.
