New Delhi: Heavy rain battered Delhi on Saturday, causing widespread waterlogging, traffic snarls, fallen trees and structural damage across several parts of the capital.
South and southeast Delhi were among the worst affected, with Mahipalpur, Chhatarpur, Okhla, Sangam Vihar, Vasant Kunj, Malviya Nagar and Greater Kailash-II reporting severe waterlogging.
The PWD received 66 waterlogging and 17 tree-fall complaints, while NDMC recorded 15 complaints each for waterlogging and fallen trees.
Delhi Fire Services also received 16 tree-fall and nine house or wall-collapse calls, with no casualties reported. A woman and her two children were rescued after part of a house collapsed in Burari.
Traffic was disrupted on MB Road, Ring Road, NH-48, Mathura Road, ITO, Dhaula Kuan and other key corridors. More than 100 mm of rain was recorded in Pushp Vihar and Chhatarpur during the day.
Markets including Chandni Chowk, Chawri Bazaar, ITO and Paharganj were also affected, with water entering commercial areas. Chawri Bazaar’s wholesale market shut early after knee-deep water accumulated.
PWD Minister Parvesh Verma said several affected areas had ongoing drainage and infrastructure work, while residents criticised recurring waterlogging and civic preparedness.
