The Hemant Soren-led Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) alliance delivered a stunning electoral upset in the Jharkhand Assembly elections, clinching 56 seats and leaving the BJP far behind with only 21 seats in the 81-member assembly.
The JMM contested 41 seats, forming a formidable coalition with the Congress (30 seats), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) (6 seats), and Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) (4 seats). In contrast, the BJP contested 68 seats, supported by allies like the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) in 10 seats, Janata Dal (United) in 2, and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) in 1.
Hemant Soren celebrated a personal milestone with a commanding victory in Barhait, defeating BJP candidate Gamliyel Hembrom by a margin of 39,791 votes—a significant leap from his 2019 margin of 25,740 votes. Soren secured 95,612 votes, while Hembrom managed 55,821 votes.
Adding to the alliance’s success, Soren’s wife, Kalpana Soren, emerged as a key figure in the campaign, credited with reinvigorating the JMM during challenging times. She claimed a decisive lead in the Gandey constituency, with a margin of 16,960 votes.
This election saw a record voter turnout of 67.74%, the highest since Jharkhand’s formation in 2000. Polling was conducted in two phases, with 43 seats contested on November 13 and 38 on November 20.
