IAS Tukaram Munde: Maharashtra’s ‘Cockroach’ Slayer Leading Fight for Food Safety

Date:

Mumbai: IAS officer Tukaram Munde has emerged as one of Maharashtra’s most recognised bureaucrats, known for his strict action against corruption, negligence and unsafe food practices.

A 2005-batch IAS officer, Munde has built a reputation for honesty, discipline and a zero-tolerance approach towards wrongdoing. During his 21-year career, he has been transferred 25 times but has continued to take on challenging assignments with a focus on public service.

As the Commissioner of Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Munde led one of the state’s biggest crackdowns on milk adulteration. In a 30-day operation, the FDA conducted 360 raids, registered 235 FIRs, arrested 350 alleged adulterators and sealed 274 illegal units.

His enforcement drive also targeted prominent establishments, including Mumbai’s iconic K. Rustom & Co., over alleged quality and hygiene violations.

Munde maintains that food safety standards must apply equally to all businesses, from small roadside eateries to elite clubs, with consumer safety being the top priority.

Coming from a farmer’s family in Maharashtra, Munde’s journey reflects a commitment to accountability, discipline and equal enforcement of the law. Despite repeated transfers and challenges, he continues to prioritise public health over pressure and politics.

His mission remains clear: safe food, safe medicines and a safer Maharashtra.
