The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather warning for 15 states across the country, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the coming days due to the active southwest monsoon.
The weather department has cautioned that the ongoing weather system may lead to severe disruptions and urged the public to stay alert.
Heavy Rain Likely in Southern and Northeastern States. According to the latest IMD bulletin, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Goa, and Maharashtra’s Konkan region are likely to witness heavy to very heavy rain, with a possibility of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations.
In the northeast, states including Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are under the threat of intense showers.
In north India, states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal are expected to experience heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds, ranging between 50–70 km/h.
Central Indian states, such as Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha, are also likely to receive widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms.
In the west, parts of Gujarat may see moderate to heavy showers as the monsoon progresses.
Monsoon Status: Advancing Northward
The IMD stated that the southwest monsoon will remain active over south peninsular India and the Konkan-Goa region. Over the next 24 hours, the monsoon is expected to advance further into Gujarat, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha.
Subsequently, it is expected to cover West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, and eastern Uttar Pradesh over the next three days.
Regions Impact Across
Coastal and ghat areas of Kerala and Karnataka are expected to receive over 20 cm of rainfall, raising concerns over landslides and flash floods. In Mumbai and surrounding parts of Maharashtra, heavy rain is forecast from June 15 to 18, with a high risk of urban flooding and traffic disruptions.
In the northeast, floods in Manipur have already affected over 1.64 lakh people, while landslide incidents are increasing in Mizoram. The Delhi-NCR region is under a yellow alert, with light to moderate rainfall expected through June 18.
IMD Issues Public Advisory
In view of the forecast, the IMD has advised citizens to stay away from rivers, streams, and flood-prone areas, especially during thunderstorms. The agency has also warned against venturing into the sea along the coasts of Kerala, Karnataka, and Goa. Authorities in flood- and landslide-prone districts have been asked to remain on high alert and ensure preparedness for relief and rescue operations.
