The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued critical weather alerts on May 26, 2025, forecasting heavy rainfall across multiple regions as the southwest monsoon advances. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the alerts and expected conditions.
Red Alert for Southern States
Due to anticipated heavy rainfall today, a red alert has been issued for Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. The southwest monsoon is set to expand into more areas of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and remaining parts of Tamil Nadu in the coming days, intensifying weather activity in these states.
Delhi-NCR Under Yellow Alert
In Delhi-NCR, a yellow alert warns of today’s heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Residents are advised to prepare for potential disruptions as the region braces for significant weather changes.
Northeast Faces Prolonged Heavy Rainfall
Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are expected to experience heavy rainfall until May 31, with extremely heavy downpours forecast between May 28 and 31. The IMD urges heightened vigilance in these states.
Mumbai and Maharashtra Monsoon Update
Mumbai’s southwest monsoon is expected to arrive within 48 hours. The IMD downgraded the city’s alert from red to yellow on May 25. Still, a red alert remains for Ratnagiri, Satara, and Kolhapur due to a depression over the Arabian Sea, intensified from a low-pressure system. This depression is likely to make landfall in Ratnagiri, bringing heavy rainfall and winds up to 50 km/h. Alerts for Konkan and western Maharashtra warn of “extremely heavy to very heavy” rainfall in the coming days.
