India Reports Second Case Of Mpox; Man Returned From UAE

Date:

A second case of Mpox, monkeypox has been confirmed in India.

The 38-year-old man from Kerela’s Malappuram has tested positive after returning from the United Arab Emirates last week.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George confirmed this in her Facebook post. She urged the people to seek treatment and inform the Health Department if they displayed any known symptoms.

Talking to reporters, Veena George said the man arrived from Dubai last week and showed mpox symptoms.

“Since he had developed symptoms, he initially went into self-quarantine at home and stayed in a separate room with toilet facilities. He has taken precautions. He did not interact with others at home.”

According to reports, the man had been admitted to the Government Medical College hospital at Manjeri and isolated. His sample had been sent for testing to Kozhikode Medical College.

The second confirmed case comes after almost 10 days. A man who had travelled from western Africa tested positive in Delhi. He is stable and has been isolated to prevent the virus from spreading.

In August, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared that the mpox outbreak in many African countries should be considered a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

The government said this strain, however, is not part of the public health emergency declared last month by the World Health Organization. The WHO notification was about ‘clade 1’ of the virus.
