In a major diplomatic move following the devastating terror attack in Pahalgam, which left 26 dead, India has suspended all visa services for Pakistani nationals, effective immediately. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement confirming the suspension, which is a direct response to the recent violence that has shaken the region.
The MEA’s statement emphasized that the decision was in continuation of the actions taken by the Cabinet Committee on Security in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack. “The Government of India has decided to suspend visa services to Pakistani nationals with immediate effect,” the statement read. It further announced that all valid visas issued to Pakistani citizens would be revoked starting April 27. The only exception to this suspension will be medical visas, which will remain valid only until April 29.
Additionally, the government has instructed all Pakistani nationals currently residing in India to leave the country before the expiry of their visas. The Ministry also issued a strong advisory for Indian nationals, urging them to avoid traveling to Pakistan, while advising those already in Pakistan to return to India at the earliest possible opportunity.
The decision comes in the wake of a horrific attack on Tuesday, when terrorists opened fire on tourists in the Baisaran meadow of Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The attack killed 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen, while several others were injured. This assault has been described as one of the deadliest in the region since the 2019 Pulwama attack, which claimed the lives of 40 CRPF personnel.
This suspension follows an earlier decision on Wednesday, where the MEA canceled all visas issued under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES) and demanded that Pakistani officials leave India within 48 hours.
